Internationally renowned Welsh harpist Catrin Finch will perform once again with the award-winning Colombian joropo band Cimarrón for a tour across the UK, including dates in Cardigan and Aberystwyth.
Introduced by Spanish colonists, the harp is deeply embedded in Latin American folk music, featuring centre stage in the Colombian seven-piece Cimarrón, who will reunite with Ceredigion harp adventuress Finch a decade on from their acclaimed collaboration of 2007-10.
As in Finch’s multi-award-winning partnership with Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita, the project comprises a thrillingly dynamic, fully reciprocal dialogue of traditions, styles and material: virtuosos revelling in commonality and contrast.
Led by harpist/composer Carlos Rojas, Cimarrón play the wild, fiercely rhythmic joropo and llanera music of the vast Orinoco plains, evolved from Andalusian, African and indigenous sources.
The tour starts on Monday, 20 January, at Theatr Mwldan in Cardigan before dates across Wales, England and Scotland, including at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Wednesday, 29 January.
Finch is one of the world’s leading harp players, whose career has featured both solo performances with the world’s top orchestras and, more recently, collaborations with leading world music artists.
The six-piece Grammy-nominated Cimarrón perform joropo dance music from the cattle-rearing plains of the Orinoco, rooted in a deep tradition defined by the mestizo mixed heritage of African, Spanish and indigenous cultures.
Cimarrón make wild, untamed music that preserves the spirit of freedom found in one of the world’s most untouched regions.
Fast-paced and powerful, it’s music with impetuous singing, amazing stomp dancing and fierce instrumental virtuosity of strings and percussion.
The performance at Theatr Mwldan starts at 7.30pm, and the Aberystwyth Arts Centre date will kick off at 8pm.
