Madam,

Your regular correspondent Tony Jones frequently stimulates debate in your “letters” pages, and his missive on the proposed Aberystwyth to Carmarthen railway line drew a response from your readership. However, the part of his letter which I resent lies in the paragraph - and I quote - “We cannot rely on England to keep funding the public sec-tor economy of Mid Wales”. The myth that the Welsh economy is funded by England is both unhelpful and also inaccurate, overlooking the fact that the working population of Wales (whatever their nationality) are subjected to income tax, value added tax, vehicle tax, fuel tax, corporation tax, capital gains tax etc, along with National Insurance so, in effect, we are only getting funding which we contributed to the central government in Westminster. I do hope this misconception is put to rest once and for all.

Yours etc
