THE National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee has said that the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth remains a “vital resource to the people of Wales” as an Audit Office report said that “more work needs to be done” to secure its financial future.

As reported in the Cambrian News last week, the Auditor General for Wales, Huw Vaughan Thomas, released a report which said the library has been through a “difficult period” since 2013.

The report said that more work needs to be done, but that the library had improved “important aspects” of its management in the wake of a financial crisis which led to the shedding of dozens of jobs.

The chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Nick Ramsay AM said: “The National Library of Wales is a vital resource to the people of Wales.

“The Auditor General’s report highlights improvements to important aspects of the library’s governance and management following a difficult period.

“The library still faces some significant challenges to establish its sustainability in responding to reductions in Welsh Government funding.

“However, the report draws attention to the need for the Welsh Government, as the library’s sponsor, to play its part in that process."
