Madam,
In your edition of 31 October there is an article about the organisers of the Get Connected Rali Bae Ceredigion handing out cheques to local schools and a defibrillator to the area most severely affected by the closed road rally held on Sunday, 8 September this year.
I note that no contribution was made to any organisation such as the Woodland Trust in small compensation for the environmental damage caused by this event. Jeremy Moore and Sarah Jane Morgan have written at length about this and the disruption to the lives of those unfortunate to live in the affected area. I trust that Jeremy and Sarah have already written to the official organisations that must have assisted the organisers in closing roads and footpaths - Ceredigion County Council, Dyfed-Powys Police and Natural Resources Wales. The heads of these bodies, and Aberystwyth University who provided accommodation for competitors and support teams, should be asked how they can square support for this rally with their environmental responsibilities.
A petition might give some idea of the level of opposition to repeating this event.
I endorse what at least three other correspondents have said about the rally – never again please.
Yours etc, David Kirby, Cae Melyn, Aberystwyth.
