A foodbank has been set up in Aberaeron to tackle a growing crisis in rural Wales.

The newly established Aberaeron Food Bank says it is off to a good start after a generous response from the local community.

Established last month, the food bank already has over 250 followers and has collected hundreds of food items for people in the Aberaeron community who are facing a food crisis.

Despite the strong start, the food bank is still in need of food to put food packages together to help those in the community who are in need.

Dafydd Tudur, a volunteer with Aberaeron Food Bank, said: “We know very well that we live in a kind and caring community and we are extremely grateful for the generous response from the community.

“We have already had many offers of donations from residents and businesses.

“Food poverty is shocking and unacceptable in modern day Wales and we felt compelled to meet the need in the area.

“We are mostly members of local chapels and churches and only formed in late November.

“Things have moved quickly and we have been organising in the hope of distributing the first parcels in time for Christmas.

“We are still collecting food every Saturday at the Peniel Chapel Vestry between 10am and 12.30pm.

“We would be grateful for any donation of long-life foods for meals.

“These include breakfast cereals, teabags, coffee and tinned meals and desserts.

“We have had a very encouraging start but we will need to collect food continuously.”

Aberaeron Food Bank will operate the same process of vouchers and referrals used by other foodbanks in the county where a referral is made to the foodbank by support services such as social services or GPs when people are in crisis.

All collections and distributions will be carried out in line with coronavirus public health protection requirements.

Full details of the items collected by the foodbank are available on their Facebook page, Banc Bwyd Aberaeron Food Bank.
