AN Aberystwyth woman has thanked people for their generosity after a coffee morning in memory of her late grandfather raised more than £1,200 for charity.
Nia Gore’s coffee morning at Rhydypennau Village Hall on Saturday raised £1,231.46, which is likely to rise with donation pledges, for the Help at Home Aberystwyth Volunteering charity.
Nia’s grandfather Ken Hughes, a well-known farmer and agricultural contractor from Comins Coch, passed away surrounded by family at his Troedrhiwgwynau farm home in July.
After the success of Saturday’s coffee morning, Nia wished to thank those individuals and businesses who helped her raise such a significant sum.
Nia told the Cambrian News: “The support from local businesses and friends has been amazing in donating prizes. I am so grateful to the people who turned up to support.
And my helpers on the day — I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them. The support of my husband Dusty, daughter Elin, Mum Ann and dad Ieuan have been a huge strength to me.”
Ken started the business KL Hughes & Sons, which is still being run by his two sons and two grandsons.
Speaking to the Cambrian News ahead of the coffee morning last week, Nia said the “amazing” and “compassionate” help of two charities, Hospice at Home Aberystwyth Volunteering (Hahav) and Severn Hospice, allowed the fulfilment of Ken’s final wish — to die peacefully at home with dignity.
And Nia is hoping the success of the coffee morning can be replicated next Sunday, 15 October, when a memorial tractor run starting at 1pm from Aberystwyth Livestock Market, Lovesgrove, will raise money for Severn Hospice.
