Aberystwyth Town Council will not be submitting a proposal to host the National Eisteddfod, it can be confirmed this week.

Lampeter and Cardigan councils are hoping to stage the prestigious event in their areas.

But out-going Aberystwyth mayor Cllr Endaf Edwards cited a lack of “physical space” within the town council’s area to be able to host the most culturally significant event in Wales.

Cllr Edwards told the Cambrian News: “Ceredigion County Council had contacted all town and community councils in the county asking for expressions of interest/information regarding any identified sites within their area to be submitted to them by the end of March.

“The site requirements are such that the physical space simply does not exist within the Aberystwyth Town Council area.

“Any suitable sites close to Aberystwyth lie outside the council’s area, therefore it is not our place to contact Ceredigion with information about these.”

After National Eisteddfod chiefs confirmed the 2020 festival will be held in the county, hopes in the town are high that it will return to Cardigan for the first time since the scorching summer of 1976.
