Madam,

An article in a recent issue of the Cambrian News had the heading ‘Hard Brexit will be devastating’, so says our MP, Mark Williams. I’m not sure how the terms hard and soft Brexit have come to be in common use. They seem to be used mainly by those who refuse to accept the wishes of the majority to leave the EU. Tim Farron, Nick Clegg and Mark Williams were not old enough to have voted in the last referendum in 1975. May I remind them of the result.

The question was: “Do you want the UK to remain in the EEC?” In 1975 it was 52.1 per cent for yes and 47.9 per cent for no. In the 2016 referendum, 51.9 per cent voted to leave and 48.1 per cent to remain. These results are interesting, almost reverse outcomes.

The main difference is, and I was there in 1975 and voted, that those who lost the vote did not whine non-stop to change the decision of the majority. It was accepted.

The UK has voted to leave the EU, so why can’t the Liberals and others just accept it?

Yours etc,

Chris Samuel, William Street, Aberystwyth.
