ABERYSTWYTH’S annual pantomime has been postponed due to fears over the Omicron variant.
In a statement from the Wardens, who put on the annual pantomime at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, they confirmed that January’s show ‘Mother Goose’ has been postponed.
The theatre company said: “It is with a heavy heart that we have to postpone our forthcoming pantomime ‘Mother Goose’ which we had planned for January in Aberystwyth Arts Centre.
“This is a very hard announcement to make but too little is known about the effects of the Omicron strain of Covid and the potential risks this could put on people’s health.
“The Wardens are a non profit making theatre company and we always strive to keep our ticket prices as low as possible whilst covering our costs.
“The actors and crew give their time for free but we have to pay theatre costs, set hire, lighting and sound equipment hire, costume hire, professional fees and other associated costs.
“These costs require us to perform to a 90 per cent capacity audience and the latest government announcements and rise in Covid cases mean this may not be possible.
“We must make sure that we have the resources to continue in the future and, most importantly, make sure that we keep everyone involved with the show, and our audiences, safe.
“None of us can predict what effect this strain will have or how rapidly it will spread - however, all the medical and scientific advice suggests that we may expect a sharp rise in Covid cases after Christmas.
“So, sadly, we have had to make this difficult decision which we are sure you will all understand.
“We genuinely hope that we can present this pantomime in January 2023 with the same cast and company.
“Sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support.”
