AN open day in Aberdyfi caused a huge splash when scores of wannabe yachtsmen and women embarked on sailing lessons.
Warm sunshine and fair winds helped to ensure that the Dovey Yacht Club event on Bank Holiday Monday was a “huge success”, according to organisers.
The club was busy all day with a fleet of six boats taking more than 70 visitors for their first sail on the beautiful Dyfi estuary.
Des George, commodore of Dovey Yacht Club, said: “It was really encouraging to see so many people interested in sailing, who had never been afloat before.
“Many of them signed-up for sailing courses and have completed membership application forms, which is fantastic and we look forward to welcoming them to Dovey Yacht Club again in the near future.”
Encouraged by the success of the open day, Dovey Yacht Club is holding another similar event on Sunday, 15 July, from 11am until 4pm.
Everyone is welcome and can have a go at sailing under the guidance of an experienced sailor.
There will be special discount membership offers for those who join on the day.
Phil Morgan, head of training at DYC, said: “There is clearly strong demand for training courses. If anyone is interested in attending a course, please send an e-mail to [email protected] and we’ll try to put on further learn to sail courses this year.
“Please also keep an eye on our website www.doveyyachtclub.org.uk for further information.”
Des added: “I would like to say a big thank-you to all the members who willingly volunteered their time to introduce so many visitors to the wonderful sport of sailing.”
