AN OSPREY protection site in Porthmadog is to receive £12,000 after receiving the most votes from customers in a supermarket community scheme.

Bywyd Gwyllt Glaslyn Wildlife has received the funding boost through Tesco’s Bags for Help which is a local grant scheme where the money raised from the government’s 5p bag charge is being used to fund local projects.

Customers at the supermarket in Porthmadog have been voting for which project they wanted to see awarded the cash, and Cambrian News readers were given the chance to register extra votes for the good cause of their choice.

After all the votes were counted, the wildlife project came out on top.

A spokesperson for Bywyd Gwyllt Glaslyn Wildlife said: “This is great news – we owe a huge thanks to Tesco and to the people of the local community who voted for our project at the Tesco stores in Porthmadog, Caernarfon and Bangor.

“Things are progressing quickly and a working group has already been formed to discuss how to put this money to best use.

“It’s important to us that a visit to our site in Pont Croesor leaves people feeling inspired, especially our younger generations.

“With this in mind, we are developing ideas to create fun learning experiences.

“Features and activities will be designed to introduce children to the wonders of the natural world and provide them with inspiration to continue exploring when they get home.”
