ABERYSTWYTH’S park-and-ride service should continue for at least a year to allow changes to parking in the town to settle down, members of a council committee have said.
Cabinet members had agreed that the council would not renew the contract for the service when it expires later this month, leaving operator Mid Wales Travel to decide whether to continue the route on a commercial basis or not.
The council has claimed that work on the hospital will mean the service cannot travel to Caradog Road for several months and there are alternative bus services.
But the decision was called in, with council chairman Dai Mason claiming that Cabinet members may have been “misled” over the service.
That has led to the Thriving Communities Scrutiny Committee recommending that the Cabinet reconsider the future of the service and that, if Mid Wales Travel choose to give notice to abandon the route, the council should go out to tender with a 12-month contract.
That would allow time to see how the multi-storey car park to be built as part of the Mill Street development will affect parking.
