Madam,

Aberystwyth’s pavements are becoming more and more dangerous.

On the one hand, more motorists are parking on pavements, some blocking them so badly that wheelchairs and pushchairs have to go into the road to get past.

On the other, one increasingly sees cyclists riding at high speed along pavements (yes, adults, not children, on pavements, not cycle tracks).

These misguided cyclists need reminding of the Highway Code: ‘You must not cycle on a pavement’. The words ‘must not' in the code denote a legal requirement: failure to observe it is a criminal offence.

Law-abiding cyclists (and I consider myself one of them) who regularly use Aberystwyth’s roads will know that cycling here is reasonably safe. True, accidents sometimes occur, some due to the carelessness of drivers, but that is no reason to break the law and endanger pedestrians.

I hope that the police will enforce the law regarding both cyclists and motorists to restore safety to our pavements.

Yours etc, Laurie Wright, 39 Dan-y-coed, Aberystwyth.
