Madam,

Further to Sue Slocombe’s letter of 16 March (‘We’ve seen many acts of speeding and accidents’), I have also been having a long-standing battle with the authorities since 2014 about the traffic problems in Llanon.

I am a disabled woman living in Llanon and am having increasing problems walking through the village. I live on the southern side and, whilst there is a pavement crossing the bridge on one side of the road, the pavement that I believe was supposed to have been put on my side has never happened - despite money having been asked for, and given as part of a previous planning consent many years ago. A housing estate has now also been built on the corner, increasing the number of people wanting to cross the bridge on my side. This means that to get across the bridge to go into the village safely one faces walking on the road or crossing the road to the pavement on the opposite side. Crossing presents yet more difficulties. Visibility is very poor, especially if, like me, one can only cross slowly. There is a lot of traffic and as I find standing very difficult I am in a lot of discomfort waiting for a gap - a crossing is desperately needed at both ends of the village. Traffic is also constantly exceeding the speed limit of 30mph through the village and there are no attempts to control it. The pavements are very narrow in places and speeding cars and lorries are sometimes just an inch away from me. There are now several elderly residents on my side of the main road at the southern end of the village, and life for us in Llanon is getting increasingly difficult and frightening, especially with increasing numbers of cars and vans parked on the pave-ments. I have seen police cars going through the village completely ignoring these. I have, on several occasions, had to stop the traffic to get past and a walker, wheelchair or push-chair would certainly not be able to pass.

All in all, the pedestrian versus traffic situation in Llanon is just an accident waiting to happen. Am I to be the accident before those in charge of such things do their jobs?

Yours etc

Marianne Pateman

Llanon.
