A PENSIONER’S plans of a family Christmas at home in Pontrhydygroes with his grandchildren were ruined after a car careered off the road, ploughing through his garden and demolishing the front door into his living room.

Alan Ferkins of Bron Heulog is now spending the festive season in the West Midlands with his son after the incident, which he said was “shocking and upsetting”.

“I was away when it happened and I got a phone call saying a car had smashed through the house,” the 72-year-old told the Cambrian News.

“I could not believe it. I went back to the house and it was an absolute mess.”

Mr Ferkins, who has lived in the village for over 30 years, moving there permanently after he retired, has called for safety measures on the road, saying similar incidents had happened before.

“This is the fourth time in 10 years that someone has come off the road,” he said.

“The other ones only damaged the wall of the garden, but this one was going at such a fast speed after leaving the road that it smashed through the garden and right into the front door.

“There needs to be a ‘slow down’ sign or ideally a barrier to protect us.”
