Aberystwyth is “not bulletproof” and a “persistent” homelessness problem remains despite the efforts of a charity based in the town.
Guy Evans, the executive director of the Care Society, spoke to Aberystwyth town councillors at a meeting on Monday.
Mr Evans said that the charity was aware of roughly 25 people sleeping rough throughout Ceredigion, with the “vast majority” of those in Aberystwyth.
Nine rough sleepers were counted at the last night-time count between 11pm and 5am on one night in November last year.
“In the main, we punch above our weight in dealing with these issues,” Mr Evans told councillors.
“But there is a transient and persistent homelessness problem in Aberystwyth.
“Given that there has been a national rise in rough sleeping of 165 per cent, it’s no surprise there is a growing problem here.
“Aberystwyth is not bulletproof in that regard.”
Cllr Alun Williams said: “There’s been a huge rise in rough sleeping [in Aberystwyth].
“It seems to have gone have so much, so quickly recently.”
Mr Evans told councillors that homelessness is a “transcending issue” and that many factors are in play that leave people on the streets.
“It is a very complex issue,” he said.
“Lots are dealing with mental health issues as well as alcohol and drug use.”
Despite funding being cut to zero this year, the Care Society is hoping to keep it running by finding the £13,000 a year required.
