Over £14,000 has been raised for the Glaslyn Osprey Centre.

The wildlife centre set up the appeal to raise money for its live-streaming service, and supporters have backed the project, raising £14,562 so far.

The money will be used to upgrade camera and computer equipment.

This will allow the centre to offer a live stream of the centre which can be accessed online from anywhere, something which has proved even more popular this year.

Visitor centre manager Heather Corfield said: “We’ve raised over £14,500 in two months which is phenomenal.

“People have been so generous and I think it’s their way of saying thank you for getting them through lockdown.

“The money means so much this year as we were not able to open and lost money from visitor donations and from the shop.

“But people have been able to watch the ospreys on our live-stream and have donated money to help us keep that going.”

The wildlife centre has experienced problems with the live-stream, which prompted the fundraiser.

“The cameras and the computer are all getting old and we realised this year, especially with lockdown, that we need to have good equipment,” said Heather.

“It was a boost for people to be able to watch the ospreys in lockdown and we had lots of messages from people saying how it helped.

“A new PC will drive our nest cameras and we hope to buy a microphone, another camera and, as the equipment runs on solar power, an upgrade to compensate for cloudy days.”

Thanks to donations from the public, phase one of the live-stream update has begun. It will continue throughout the winter.

“Early installation means that any teething problems with the system can now be resolved well in advance of the ospreys returning next spring,” a post on the centre’s social media page explains.

“It also means that we should be able to keep the live-streaming running for a few more weeks, so that you can continue to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Glaslyn Valley.

“The upgrade of the PC also means that we are now able to stream the images from our cameras in full HD 1080p resolution for the very first time. Some of you have already commented on the wonderfully clear view.

“It is due to your generosity and support of our live streaming appeal that we have been able to carry out this work.

“The Live Streaming Appeal 2021 currently stands at £14,562 after only two months.

“Thanks very much to everyone who has contributed. We still have some way to go before we reach our target, but hopefully we will get there before long.

“We look forward to being better and stronger in 2021. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”
