YSTWYTH Cycling Club was set up by a group of keen cyclists from Aberystwyth - Norman Wyman, Ben Wigley, Peter Jones and John Chessam - and enjoyed its first full year as a club in 1952.

They initially met at Edleston House, Queens Road, Aberystwyth in October 1951 to discuss setting up the club.

More cyclists joined during the club’s first year, including William (Bill) and Audrey Rushton.

The first president was Tom Davies, the owner of a cycle shop in Pier Street.

The club held its first race The Coronation Cup in 1953, which was won by Bill Rushton - who also scooped the first annual award for the best all-rounder at the club at its first annual dinner where then town mayor Cllr W C Pryse spoke in glowing terms of the club’s activities and presented a substantial cheque.

Bill became one of the club’s most successful members, while serving as secretary of the club, and in 1958 won the Albert Davies Road Race; the 25-mile Time Trial; and the Hill Climb Championship at Llangollen.

Glyn and Ken Evans became the first club’s internationals in 1965 when they were selected to ride for Wales.

• The club would also like to hear from anyone with further information, photos or memorabilia of the history of the club to help fill in the gaps. The club can be contacted via email at [email protected].
