A DETERMINED fund-raiser has amassed hundreds of pounds for victims of a devastating earthquake.
Margaret Smith, a keen photographer, has completed a series of talks across Meirionnydd documenting her time in Nepal in 2015 (see picture on her trip right).
Just six days after her return home, on 25 April 2015, 9,000 people died during an natural disaster which also caused tens of thousands of people to lose their homes.
A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the mountainous country, just northwest of the capital of Kathmandu. It was the worst quake in more than 80 years.
Touched by the shocking proceedings, and wanting to help those she had met recently in the impoverished region, Margaret decided to showcase her photos at various organisations and explain in detail what the Nepalese people were experiencing.
All proceeds from her talks, including her personal fees, were collected enabling the photographer to donate £1,250 to Exodus Travels, an organisation involved in rebuilding Nepal.
Exodus raised in excess of £270,000 and all money has been used by their staff in Nepal providing emergency shelters and later permanent shelters, food and Healthy Eating Kitchens.
They rebuilt six schools, running a medical camp in 2016 when approximately 1,500 Nepalese people were treated for a wide range of condition.
Margaret’s donation was put towards new school furniture.
“I’d like to thank everyone who supported me by attending my talks across the region,” she said.
“The money will be put to good use and will help generations of Nepalese people to rebuild their lives.”
