PEOPLE living in Lampeter are “appalled” over plans to demolish the town’s former Ffynnonbedr Primary School in Bryn Road.

Generations of Lampeter children passed through the doors of the distinctive red brick building following its opening in 1903.

But householders in Bryn Road have now expressed concerns at plans to replace the old schoolhouse with a two-storey block of 12 one-bedroom flats, describing the building as an important part of Lampeter’s heritage.

The applicant is Mr C Davies and the site would be developed and managed by Tai Wales & West Housing.

The deadline for responses is this Friday.

“With its distinctive architecture and red brick frontage, it is a notable landmark, which is located on one of the main thoroughfares of the town,” say householders in a letter to the Cambrian News.

“To our mind, this building offers an ideal opportunity for sensitive conversion into a block of flats (as recommended in the Local Development Plan) or to some other use which befits its status (e.g. as a permanent site for Lampeter’s Museum, perhaps with craft workshops).”

The residents say they would support the provision of one-bedroomed flats if there was ‘a proven demand’ for them in the town.

“However, there are already several housing association properties with such flats in Lampeter that are not occupied by local people, but by others who have been encouraged to move to housing in Lampeter from elsewhere, both within and outside Wales,” they added.
