PENPARCAU residents have put their concerns to councillors who are considering proposals for two shipping containers to be sited near the under-construction community centre.

A decision on an application by Penparcau Community Forum to site the metal containers on land which lies next to properties at Tycam, was deferred at the county council’s planning committee last month, pending a site meeting, as reported in the Cambrian News.

The meeting took place at the site on Tuesday, 25 October, when members of the forum, along with local member Cllr Steve Davies, Aberystwyth Town Council representative Cllr Jeff Smith, and concerned residents, put their arguments to members of the panel.

Dylan Jones, chairman of the forum, said: “We are developing here something significant for the community, a disadvantaged community which is very low on the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation.”

Colin Smallman, whose home looks out over the proposed site, claimed the issue of storage should have been incorporated into plans for the new community centre.

And Patricia Fitzpatrick, whose property also borders the proposed site, said: “I do object to it because it is on the one and only untouched green area."

Cllr Jeff Smith said the town council supported the application because of the “substantial community benefit”.

The recommendations of the site inspection panel will be put before members of the planning committee on Wednesday, 9 November, where a final decision will be made.
