COUNCILLORS have backed down over their demands for a pedestrian crossing to be installed before giving the green light to relocate Cardigan Library.

It was reported in the Cambrian News last month that councillors were willing to block council plans to move Cardigan’s library from Canolfan Teifi to its district office on the corner of Morgan Street and Priory Street, if a crossing wasn’t included.

But members of the planning committee have now dropped their demands after local members consulted with the council’s Strategic Director for Sustainable Communities, Huw Morgan, who made a number of alternative safety measure proposals.

Among the proposals are “hatch markings” to narrow the road, ‘ARAF/SLOW’ markings on the road just west of Finch Square, and signs warning drivers of the potential for pedestrians in the road.

In a letter addressed to Cllr John Adams Lewis and Cllr Catrin Miles, Mr Morgan said: “The necessary criteria for any form of new controlled crossed point would not be met here.”

Cllr Lewis conceded that a pedestrian crossing at the location was impractical.

“You can see that there isn’t any space for a crossing at this location,” Cllr Lewis told the comittee.

“We hope that, with markings on the road to make it more narrow and to push the road out more from the corner, people who come onto Morgan Street will see around the corner.”
