SUPPORTING major developments in Aberystwyth including schemes at the Old Post Office and Old College is a priority for Ceredigion County Council, a new plan has revealed.

The council’s Well-Being and Improvement Objectives for 2017/18 have identified support for a host of development schemes as a key part of one of the objectives which is to boost the local economy and job creation.

The objectives were supported by Ceredigion Cabinet members, but will still have to be agreed by the full council

They identified several Aberystwyth schemes including plans for a spa and apartments at a former seafront council office; the Old Post Office site, which is yet to be developed; redevelopment of the Old College and plans for a museum at the for the Vale of Rheidol Railway, as key developments that would help the regeneration of Aberystwyth and meet one of the council’s key priorities of making Aberystwyth a major regional centre.

While plans have been revealed for the spa and apartments at the former Swyddfa’r Sir office, Old College and Vale of Rheidol, proposals for the Old Post Office site are not known following the collapse in 2009 of a scheme that proposed potentially using compulsory purchase orders to snap up retail properties in Chalybeate Street and the lower side of Great Darkgate Street as part of a proposal that would have seen chain store Debenhams open in Aberystwyth.

However, in the objective document, the Old Post Office site is earmarked as a potential major development for the town.
