COUNCILLORS have objected to street lights being installed in the car park of Aberystwyth’s new Premier Inn hotel.
Aberystwyth Town Council, which has no power to block planning applications, but is consulted if the location is in town, voted to object to the plans, which Premier Inn says are to provide security for guests.
The application is for 12 security lights, 10 of which will be on the rear extension of the building, nine “washer down” lights which illuminate the walls of the extension from the third floor, and nine car park lights.
Outlining the application, chair of the council’s planning committee, Cllr Jeff Smith, said: “Premier Inn wants to put lights on the outside to light up the car park, and they also want some on the front for CCTV.”
Cllr Talat Chaudhri said: “I understand the safety issue with the car park, but there are lots of lights on the front and if they are very high it affects houses around, doesn’t it.”
Cllr Sue Jones-Davies said: “This is to do with light pollution, and we have had this issue before.”
“This is overkill.”
