A GROUP that was set up to oppose plans for the revival of an animal carcass storage facility in Llanbedr have said they are “disappointed” that the applicant is appealing the refusal of the application.

Cyfeillion Cwm Nantcol Friends opposed the plans to erect a new building at Pentre Gwynfryn that would mainly be used to store dead animals from nearby farms, as well as demolishing existing outbuildings.

The site is near the historic Salem Chapel.

The application proposed the “continuation of the established use of the site as a fallen stock store by the demolition of existing outbuildings and erection of new building measuring 13.5 x 9 metres”.

Friends member Sian James said at the time of the application that the incinerator hasn’t been used for years and an operational site would be disastrous

Having been initially turned down in 2019, members of the Snowdonia National Park’s planning committee once again refused newly submitted amended plans for the demolition and new building.

The application, submitted by Cymru Lan Cyf, was overwhelmingly objected to by the local community and authorities.

But the applicants have said they will launch an appeal.

A spokesperson for the Friends said: “We are not surprised, but we are disappointed. After all, this was one of the most objected-to applications in the history of the National Park.

“It is very clear that in launching this appeal, both the applicant and Cymru Lan have scant regard for the wishes of the local community.

“It even tries to deny that the kennels onsite are actually kennels. We intend to follow through on our earlier efforts by submitting a rebuttal of this flawed appeal.”

Richard Carter, on behalf of the applicant of the plans Chris Bennett, said: “The buildings on site are as described in the existing planning permission. It is not a claim as to their designation on behalf of the applicant, it appears on public record. Please refer to the existing planning permissions, supporting documents and plans.

“This application is simply to demolish two small outbuildings and replace them with one building with a floor-space smaller than the existing buildings.

“Also, additional environmental controls and habitat creation will be added.

“The application has not requested a change of use, it will operate within existing permissions.

“None of the current objections relate to the application to demolish two buildings and replace them with a smaller one, it relates to matters which have already been determined upon and are no longer pertinent.

“The decision relating to this application is whether, demolishing two small outbuildings and replacing them with a smaller one, improving environmental control and creating additional habitat, will have a greater and unacceptable impact compared to the existing development.”
