AN ABERYSTWYTH members’ club, which is the oldest in Wales, will lose meeting rooms at its town centre premises if planners back a scheme to convert the rooms into flats.
Joseph Evans, who owns the building which houses the St David’s Club, has lodged a planning application seeking permission for a change of use of the upper floors of the building from club meeting rooms to four apartments.
This is not opposed by the snooker club members, who will retain the large snooker room, as the meeting rooms are not really used because of a drop in member numbers.
The planning application says a deal has been struck with club members that would see the snooker room remain for use by the club.
The St David’s Club has used the building, which is located on the corner of Eastgate and Pier Street, since 1903, although it had to move out temporarily after a fire in 1915.
But documents lodged as part of the planning application said club member numbers had dropped, which meant that many of the rooms previously used were mostly used for storage only and were not really needed.
The application says that, following discussions between Mr Evans and the club, it was agreed that only the snooker room was required for the club to continue.
