ABERYSTWYTH town councillors have strongly opposed plans to install large internally-illuminated signs on the new M&S and Tesco stores.
Marks & Spencer has submitted plans for signs on the outside of its Mill Street store.
Councillors have questioned the proposed signs’ lighting and the fact they don’t appear to be bilingual.
Cllr Jeff Smith, chair of the planning committee, said: “One thing I noticed is that one sign says ‘M&S Food Hall’. I think that these signs should be bilingual. All signs should be bilingual.
“Also, if you see the application, they intend to have signs which are internally illuminated. That goes against the statutory guidelines in Aberystwyth, and we usually object to signs such as this.”
Cllr Ceredig Davies added: “I have been contacted by a resident living in Park Avenue who says illuminated signs will affect her property, whether or not they would be left on 24/7.
“Whenever she would look out of her back window, she would see the lights and it would affect her quality of life.”
Cllr Endaf Edwards added: “I think we should object to it because the fact that signs are not bilingual, and also because they are internally illuminated.
