PLANS have been revealed for a radical new mountain bike track in Tywyn.
The ‘pump park’, an undulating looping track for mountain bikers to race on, has been suggested to Tywyn Town Council and was greeted with enthusiasm.
Cllr Dan Wyre, who also works as a sports photographer, urged the council to consider the innovative scheme as it would offer the community and visitors a new asset which would be open all year round.
Cllr Wyre said: “The patch of grass next to the skatepark would be perfect for the project. It would really offer something different to the town.
“It wouldn’t be expensive and would be a good use of the land. It looks natural. If it’s done right, with tarmac and not just soil, there should be very little in the way of maintenance costs.
"The park would be a welcome addition for local teenagers and I’m sure people would stop off to use it too, not just youngsters but adults as well.
“We can make sure it integrates with the countryside, by planting trees etc, so it won’t be an eyesore.
“People already travel from places like Barmouth to use the skatepark, so this would encourage more visitors to the area and bring more money for local businesses.”
Using his contacts in the world of downhill mountain biking, Cllr Wyre believes he can set up the track with minimum expenditure.
“One of the best downhill riders in the country, Joel Chidley, has offered to design the track for free,” the Tywyn councillor added.
