PLANS have been approved to demolish a temporary cabin at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth and replace it with a new building.
The two-storey cabin, which has been on the grounds of the Grade II* listed building since 1993, currently houses the existing post room and offices.
The plan will see it demolished and replaced with a new three storey building, comprising of a post room at ground floor level, offices at first floor level and storage at second floor level.
As part of the scheme a new link through to the Gregynog Gallery at second floor level, will be formed, along with a new access ramp in order to aid access from the car park for both
deliveries and for those with mobility issues.
The scheme received an objection from the Ancient Monuments Society who said they were “surprised that the documentation does not indicate whether any alternative options to replacing the cabins have been considered.”
Ceredigion council planning officers, in a report, said they were “satisfied there were no alternatives” to the new building.
“The proposal will remove an unsightly portacabin building and will replace it with a higher quality building,” planners said.
“There are substantial benefits associated with the proposal including the provision of modern postroom and office facilities, additional storage and better access and means of escape to the Gregynog Gallery.
The scheme was given the go ahead by Ceredigion council planners under delegated powers last week.
