Plans have been approved for Aberystwyth pier, which will give “dramatic views” and an “al fresco dining experience” on the seafront.

Ceredigion County Council planners gave the green light to plans for The Royal Pier to remove seven windows at the rear of the building and install full-height, fully glazed bi-fold doors and glazed balustrades.

Council planners said the windows being removed “are not part of the original pier and were added at a later date”, but the plan “will involve the removal of a limited part of the existing pier structure”.

The scheme, which designers said would “create openings which will create far-reaching views and provide an alfresco dining experience”, was also granted Listed Building Consent.

The work is part of a large-scale renovation of the Grade II listed building, built in 1872.
