A Grade II listed building in Aberystwyth has gone back on the market after plans to turn it into flats fell through.
The old library in Corporation Street was put up for sale after it was closed in 2012 and the town library moved to the former town hall.
Ceredigion council said the building was sold to developers in 2016, despite a community bid to buy the former library and retain it for community use.
Proposals put forward for the library included a specialist substance misuse facility and even a bar, but it was eventually sold on the open market, and plans were agreed by the council’s development control department for a conversion of the building into two three-bedroom apartments.
Planning officers gave the green light to plans for the building in June 2016, with a deadline for work to start before 2021.
That scheme was abandoned in 2018, and now the building has been placed again on the open market with an asking price of £290,000.
The building is being listed through agents Morris Marshall & Poole, whose listing said it requires “substantial investment”.
The agents said the “iconic Grade II Listed building requires complete refurbishment/restoration and would be particularly well suited to the hospitality sector with a mix of residential accommodation as well.
“The property occupies a particularly large site, a lot larger than the initial frontage would suggest and this is shown on the site plan within these particulars.
“Within the rear grounds a former dwelling house is also in need of complete refurbishment.”
