Residents have been urged to fight “out of character” proposals to build 20 social housing units in Penrhyncoch.

The Wales and West Housing Association wants to build the houses on a farmer’s field on the main Pendam road through the village between Horeb Chapel and the Mid Wales Travel garage.

Permission has already been granted for a six-home development for the Pen y Banc site.

But now WWHA has launched a pre-planning consultation for a much larger scheme, including four three-bedroom houses, four two-bedroom houses, four two-bedroom bungalows and eight one-bedroom flats.

Residents in the village have been made aware of the proposals through a leaflet drop and Cllr Dai Mason said he has already received more objections to this scheme than any other development during his time as local member.

And there are concerns that this could just be the first phase of the development and many more houses could be planned.

Cllr Mason said: “The concerns I have received compile the most substantial opposing response I have seen during my time as a councillor.

“The number of local people who have contacted me are of the opinion that the planned housing should be better integrated rather than compressed in a relatively small area, within a village where such a scheme would be out of character and inconsistent.”
