Plans have been drawn up to demolish “eyesore” former offices in Pwllheli and turn them into 28 much-needed flats for the elderly.
Housing association Adra wants to build a three-storey extra-care development on the site of Canolfan Frondeg, which was previously used as offices for social services and public meeting rooms, but is now empty.
Canolfan Frondeg (pictured) would be demolished to make way for the new development.
The plans include 16 two-bedroom and 12 one-bedroom extra-care flats for people aged over 55, plus communal facilities and office, 23 parking spaces and landscaping.
Councillor for Pwllheli North, Dylan Bullard said: “There is a lack of housing in Pwllheli. By building these places it will possibly release council housing for local families.
“The building itself is currently a bit of an eyesore, so hopefully it will add something new to Pwllheli.”
The council is supporting the application, saying that demand for this kind of accommodation is expected to increase over the next 20 years, and Pwllheli has been identified as a growth area.
Some objections were raised during a consultation, on the basis of overlooking neighbouring properties and “domination” of the area, but planning officers are recommending the plan be approved.
A decision is expected when the committee meets in Caernarfon on Monday, 9 December.
