AN ABERYSTWYTH town councillor has hit out at plans for a major redevelopment of Aberystwyth Town Football Club and almost 60 apartments, claiming it is over development of the area.

Plans for the joint development between Aberystwyth Town FC and social housing association Tai Ceredigion are currently with Ceredigion County Council’s planning department, but have yet to go before councillors.

However, Cllr Mair Benjamin, who lives in the area around the football club, has warned that many residents are unhappy and suggested that the development would constitute overbuilding.

She is calling on councillors and politicians to oppose the plans. Cllr Benjamin said: “We really do not need this and I would like to state my objection to this application.”

“We are concerned about flooding issues, noise, safety of the children living in the flats, and of children using the play area. Phase 2 is, as far as this area is concerned, a definite no. This is over build. Build it on your doorstep and not ours please."

A council spokesperson said it was expected that the application would go to the council’s planning meeting in June.

One phase of work, which will see 33 flats built at the rear of the ground, has already been granted planning approval, with the plans for the redevelopment of the club’s stand, changing rooms and lounge and 57 apartments still yet to go before the authority’s development control committee.
