Plans to convert a hay barn into a gun and ammunition store are firing ahead.

The application, at Bryn Derw in Talsarnau, Dyffryn Ardudwy, has been approved by Snowdonia National Park’s planning committee on the recommendation of officers and North Wales Police who were satisfied with the proposals.

Since the recent closure of a gun shop in Penrhyndeudraeth, the nearest similar store is 32 miles away in Bangor.

A report from planning officers said such shops needed to be located away from built up areas: “The proprietor proposes to provide an element of training/demonstration on the use of guns to ensure that novices are equipped with the right type of gun and to ensure that it is used safely.

“This will be carried out on surrounding land within his ownership prior to customers making a purchase.

“The applicant sees this as an important part of the business and buying experience.

“The use of firearms on the land is approved by North Wales Police and such activity cannot be carried out within 50m of a public road.

“Footfall to the site will be limited with the proprietor encouraging customers to make prior appointments.”
