COMMUNITY councillors are fearful that the new Dyfi Bridge proposals will lead to “tragedies like the ones we saw in Dolgellau”.
Speaking to the Cambrian News, Aberdyfi Community Council chair Bryn Lloyd expressed his concerns that plans for the controversial £24m Dyfi Bridge project incorporate a “potentially lethal” junction. Pennal and Tywyn community councils have also raised fears.
Under current proposals, traffic coming from the Tywyn direction along the A493, bypassing the by-then obsolete 17th century bridge, will hit a tight bend before joining a straight road adjacent to the new Dyfi crossing.
Cllr Lloyd is deeply concerned that the speed of traffic along the A487 would endanger the lives of anyone using the junction.
“We saw something similar in Dolgellau when there were changes made to the bypass (A470) and the road towards Bala (A494). These were followed by numerous serious crashes as well as two fatalities.
“At present the plans look particularly hazardous."
A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “The junction arrangements between the A487 and A493 have been reviewed during the design development process for this scheme and includes the consideration of a roundabout option.”
