A new café bar is looking to open in Aberystwyth by the summer and has applied for new signage on Yr Hen Ysgol.
Loungers, who have long been linked with the Hen Ysgol development on Alexandra Road, have submitted a planning application to install new signage for the ’Athro Lounge’ café bar.
Aberystwyth Town Council has however objected to the application saying it is monolingual and detracts from the historic features of the old school.
The town council, who are consultees but have no say in the application, filed their objection with Ceredigion County Council saying: “The town council objects to the following: Signs should not be internally illuminated in a conservation area; the goalpost sign in its planned location detracts from the historic architectural features and might be better located over the new door; monolingual signage eg ‘café bar’. Bilingual signage would widen the appeal of the business within the local community and the town council would be happy to offer support to Loungers in this aim. The council would also be very happy to help with the name if there is still room for discussion.”
In the planning application, Loungers say: "The proposed use as lounge café/bar will be a popular destination for locals of all ages, encouraging social interaction within the community.
“This use will complement the existing character of the area, will encourage an ‘active frontage’ and will strengthen the shopping area nearby.
“The lounge café/bar will be open throughout the day and into the evening, will be food led and will have a particular appeal to families - vertical drinking is not encouraged."
Alex Reilley, the man behind Loungers, said recently that he was hopeful the new bar in Aberystwyth will be open in the next three months.
