Plans to turn an ‘iconic’ Lampeter inn where former American President Jimmy Carter once enjoyed a pint into housing have upset local residents.
The Ram Inn at Cwmann, which is thought to date back to the 16th century, has been closed for the past decade.
But local councillors and residents say they are ‘upset’ at plans to convert the listed building into housing and argue that it could still reopen and once again become the heart of the community.
Pencarreg councillors were due to hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss the matter last night.
The Ram Inn is currently owned by Cwmann-based Douglas Brothers Ltd.
In a heritage impact statement, consultants JCR Planning argue that it would require ‘substantial’ investment to modernise the old pub and that the surrounding area is adequately served by several other pubs, including the nearby Cwmanne Tavern.
Wynne and Mary Davies, who were landlords in August 1995 when Jimmy Carter and his family paid a fondly remembered visit, said they were ‘saddened’ to hear of the plans.
