NEW social housing projects across Dwyfor and Meirionnydd are now underway.

Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd (CCG) has started work on a total of 28 new homes in Tywyn, Criccieth and Penrhyndeudraeth. The schemes represent a combined investment of £3 million.

Contractor Williams Homes from Bala is building the 10 houses at Waun Helyg, Criccieth, and the 12 dwellings at the former NHS site at Tywyn.

Ffrancon Williams, CCG chief executive, said: “It’s great to see the work starting at these sites.

“We have an exciting and ambitious development programme in place and we aim to build 500 homes over the next five years.

“Continuing to provide affordable and good quality housing for people who would otherwise face difficulties in securing a home is a priority for us and these new homes will help meet the increasing demand in these areas.

“We are also very pleased to be working with two local companies, Williams Homes and Brenig Construction Ltd, on these developments which will ensure that the investment is retained locally within the county of Gwynedd and will bring a number of wider economic benefits to the areas.”

The 10 houses being built at Criccieth are a mixture of two and three-bedroom homes, with four two-bedroom homes and eight flats designated for people over 55 years old being built at Tywyn.

Williams Homes director Owain Williams added: “We are proud to be building these properties on behalf of CCG, and we look forward to working in partnership with them for the first time by building quality, modern homes which will be highly efficient for Dwyfor and Meirionnydd residents.

“As a local company, we have a policy of using Welsh products and companies where we can.

“We don’t just employ people because they are the cheapest, they must fit our supplier / sub-contractor profile which takes into account all kinds of other aspects, from local employment and travel distance to using local products and suppliers.

“We are also very proud and passionate about the timber we use, and we will be using Welsh timber where possible on these two schemes.”

A further six homes are being built at Penrhyndeudraeth by Brenig Construction Ltd from Colwyn Bay in a package deal agreement.

These homes are a mixture of two and three-bedroom houses and will be available on social rent.

All three schemes are being funded by CCG and the Welsh Government and are due for completion in February / March 2019.
