Madam,

I wrote to you just over a month ago to suggest that it was unwise for the recently installed Advancing Aberystwyth touchscreen tourist kiosks to be advertising businesses in Llanelli and Swansea. These now seem to have been removed, but it was not my intention that they should be replaced with porn.

They are currently advertising Winterland Ice Skating in Aberystwyth Castle grounds for most of December and early January. Being of a scrooge-like nature, I wonder how environmentally-friendly it is - that is how much energy is required - to establish and maintain an ice rink in an outdoor situation over this period.

I understand that another of Advancing Aberystwyth’s proposals is to construct a zip-wire between Constitution Hill and the War Memorial in the castle grounds. From social media, I know that I am not alone in thinking that this proposal is not in keeping with Aberystwyth’s history and heritage as a Victorian resort – the Biarritz of Wales.

Were Mario Rutelli – the Italian sculptor who designed the war memorial – to be alive today he would be turning in his grave.

I think those approaching his “floosie with the big boobies” at the end of their run down the wire would find her a less soft and arresting object than she appears from a distance.

I can, however, think of some advantages of the zip-wire run. It will enable clients to see if building works to maintain the listed structure have recommenced on the former Deva nursing home on the promenade. These seem to have stopped several months ago.

The state of the paddling pool can also be observed. It currently contains a mixture of sand, water and the frames of a couple of out-size deck-chairs. Their fabric is missing (no jokes about not having a bottom in them) and the frames may rot if they stand in water all winter.

I won’t mention checking the hotels on the prom for signs of arson attack, as this would be in very poor taste.

Yours etc,

David Kirby, Hafodwen, Cae Melyn, Aberystwyth.
