Madam,

Regarding your story about the animal sanctuary owners warning people about myxomatosis, I caught a suffering bunny and took him straight to the vets to have him put out of his agony.

I ask other people to do the same thing. Vets do not charge for euthanasia of suffering wildlife, so all it will cost you is your time and caring. Do not inform the vets of any sightings, as there is nothing they can do.

This disease is spread by direct contact and biting insects.

There is a vaccine against myxomatosis for your pet bunny, but the virus mutates and therefore is not reliable, which is why I advise all pet rabbit houses should be protected with very fine netting to stop disease-carrying insects biting them. It takes up to two weeks of agony for a bunny to die and not two months as previously printed.

Regarding my animal charity, I have been running it for about 30 years, 16 of these near Devil’s Bridge. I have about six and a half acres, half of which is dedicated to wildlife reserve. I have seen a great expansion of wildlife in these years - at least 37 variety of birds, plus a wide range of other critters, including hedgehogs, which is part of my rescue work.

If you see any hogs in distress or out in daytime (that means something is wrong), please contact me.

Since my last rescue sheep died I have concentrated on planting trees; 650 trees were planted last winter, starting the creation of the wildlife corridor. I plan on planting another 3,000-plus. Any donations of trees, bird/bat boxes gratefully received.

I have three empty sheds and want to fit them out as nesting sites for birds/bats. Does anyone have any advice they could offer me on how to set this up? Can anyone make me a duck island as a suitable nesting site?

I am also looking for an established wildlife charity to take over my land when I am dead.

Volunteers are very welcome, jobs for all capabilities. Tel: 01974 282641, daytime only, not Sundays.

Yours etc,

Mrs C Aldhouse, Dragon’s Lair, Capel Trisant, Devil’s Bridge, Aberystwyth.
