I thought readers might like a bit of Christmas cheer to offset the Covid gloom just a little bit.
The poem I wrote is based on my own memories as a child in Aber, of a walk across the snow through the town following a Christmas night visit to the old North Road hospital, more than 60 years ago.
A Christmas Night in Aberystwyth
There was magic in the air that night
As we walked across the silent glittering snow
All was silent, all was still, all was calm
And all was special For we were children and it was Christmas night
Fairy-lights twinkled from trees in windows
Shining and smiling in multi colours
On the crisp white snow outside in the streets
And our footsteps crunched loudly on the snow
As we walked through the town on our journey home
No one could be seen, only footprints in the snow
No traffic sounds, no dogs, no cats, or passers by
To disturb the still of the night
The night was cold, but we were warm beneath our coats
And the moment felt as though it would surely never end
Only our thoughts entered the stillness of the night
As we walked across the snow
And we remembered the three wise men on their journey through desert sands
To bring special gifts on a special night
And memories that would last for evermore.
