THE bell has rung on a series of EU debates as two “political heavyweights” squared up in Aberystwyth last week.

The FUW was the first union out of the starting block to host Lord Dafydd Wigley from the ‘Stronger in Europe’ campaign, and “Brexit” — British exit from the EU — and campaigner David Jones MP, a former Secretary of State for Wales, at the debate, which was held at Aberystwyth University’s IBERS campus in Gogerddan on Friday, 18 March.

Lord Dafydd Wigley, who is the former leader of Plaid Cymru, said: “As far as the agricultural industry here in Wales is concerned I have no doubt whatsoever that the arguments for remaining part of the European Union are totally overwhelming in terms of our market share, in terms of the financial aid we get from Europe, in terms of our ability to build on the markets we have already developed and have the potential to do more.

Mr Jones focused his arguments around the European Commission being un-elected and therefore undemocratic, and did not believe there would be tariffs imposed on the UK to export into the EU market as he believed other companies wouldn not want an import tariff to the UK.

The debate was attended by over 100 FUW members and members of other farming Unions in Wales.
