CEREDIGION County Council has refused to say whether money realised from the sale of Bodlondeb will go back into providing residential care in the Aberystwyth area.

Responding to an Aberystwyth Town Council motion calling on it to do just that, the council said the money raised would go towards “maintaining services for older people” but did not specify which services and where in the county this would be reinvested.

Responding to the Cambrian News after going to press last week, the council said: “No official decision regarding the sale of Bodlondeb will take place until the building is closed.

“Should a buyer be found, any capital receipts received would be used towards maintaining services for older people.”

Penparcau councillor Charlie Kingsbury slammed the council’s response to his motion.

He said: “I think it ought to be welcomed that the money will go towards services for older people, but the response falls far short of the mark in that the real issue here is the loss of services in Aberystwyth itself.”

The original motion also condemned the Cabinet decision to close Bodlondeb, and called for the “unbroken provision of residential care in the Aberystwyth area”.

The council claims it “still” has unbroken provision of residential care in the area, and said a decision on the disposal of Bodlondeb would not take place until after its closure.

“We can assure the public that the council still has unbroken provision of care home placements in the Aberystwyth area as our home in Tregerddan has available placements within three miles of town," the spokesperson added.

“There is also provision for EMI residential placements in Hafan y Waun, Waunfawr, and in Abermad, together with residential care placements in Cysgod y Coed, Llanilar.”
