A PROUD Gwynedd councillor is set to refuse her wage increase as she believes the money could be better invested elsewhere.

All of Gwynedd’s 75 local members are due to receive an extra £200 on top of their annual wage, rising from £13,400 to £13,600, the equivalent of a 1.5 per cent raise.

It was also decided to pay cabinet members £29,300 a year whilst committee chairs can expects £22,300.

The recommendations are expected to be ratified at this week’s full council meeting (3 May).

One Gwynedd councillor has already stated she will refuse the increase as she does not believe it is fair on her constituents.

Cllr Anwen Davies, who represents Buan for Llais Gwynedd, has told the council she does not want the extra money.

“I’m not taking it, it’s not right,” said Cllr Davies, who has worked for the council for over ten years.

“There are few enough jobs around here and fewer still which are well paid, I don’t think I could take the money whilst I know that, I feel terrible for them.

“I’m out there in the community every day trying to help and I can see the problems first hand.

“I do take money for travel expenses - it’s a lot of driving on the Llyn - but I never charge for parking. I’m here for the community not for making money."
