MORE information on possible Ceredigion Council service cuts and fee increases has been demanded by councillors.

Members of council scrutiny committees had questioned whether they had been provided enough information about possible cuts to be able to decide whether to support them or oppose them.

Council leader Ellen ap Gwynn backed the right of councillors to receive full information.

But she said the council was still working through some possible cuts or fee increases and that the authority had been working with its “hands tied behind our back” because the council’s provisional funding settlement was around two months later than usual.

Cllr Ceredig Davies, the leader of the Lib Dems on the council, insisted more information, especially what impact any change would have on service providers, was needed and said there had been examples of councillors being given verbal evidence not included in papers.

He insisted information would not have been provided unless councillors had asked the “right” questions, highlighting additional information given about a potential 20 per cent increase in the cost of Meals on Wheels from £5 to £6.

Cllr Davies said: “Often, if we don’t ask the right question we don’t get the information, so it’s like drawing the information out of you. We need a narrative on what the consequences will be. This budget has less information than any I’ve seen since I became a councillor in 2004."
