HUNDREDS of people gathered on Aberystwyth’s promenade at the weekend to show their support for the town’s international population following the vote to leave the EU.
Titled ‘All Equal: An event to celebrate Aberystwyth’s international community’, speakers from across the community addressed the large crowd.
Despite the vote to leave the EU, Ceredigion was one of only five local authorities in Wales which voted to remain, with Aberystwyth labelled the “most Europhile town in the UK” in the run-up to the vote.
The organiser of the event, Matthew Richards, said: “It is vital, when politics remains so polarised, that we unite to stand shoulder to shoulder with all those who make our community what it is.
“We declare that we will work tirelessly to keep our community united. Wherever you come from you are welcome, appreciated and valued in Aberystwyth.”
Jenny Kardefelt Jones, a Swedish citizen who attended the event, said: “For the first time in 10 years I have been made to feel unwelcome in the UK. But the people of Aberystwyth are special and events like this show us that together we are stronger.”
