The First Minister of Wales has spoken of his ‘deep disappointment’ that a new tiered system of local lockdowns for England will not include adequate travel restrictions.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce a three-tiered system for England later today, with areas such as Liverpool expected to face severe restrictions.
Wales’ First Minister attended a Cobra meeting with the Prime Minister earlier today where he was told of plans for local lockdowns in England.
Following the meeting, Mr Drakeford expressed "deep disappointment at the inadequate proposals for travel restrictions in high infection areas in England", and said these would be met with great dismay in many parts of Wales where infection rates are lower.
He also requested greater clarity on the metrics for placing areas into each tier, and agreed with other devolved leaders that the Treasury’s proposals for financial support, while welcome, did not go far enough in protecting the lowest paid workers.
Health minister Vaughan Gething warned that "coronavirus is waking up for the winter" and the virus was spreading quickly in Wales.
Mr Gething said Wales would be at the same level of Covid-19 figures seen at the peak in spring in the next couple of weeks, adding “I do not want to scare people but I want people to understand that we do face a difficult few months”.
He revealed the R number in Wales currently stands at 1.37 with 330 people with coronavirus in hospital in Wales.
