A FORMER Aberystwyth mayor has urged supporters of Bodlondeb care home to unite to create a strong campaign opposing any council attempt to close it.

Elwyn Williams has warned Plaid Cymru that a decision to force the closure of the home despite opposition could “rebound” on the party in the future. And he accused Ceredigion County Council’s Plaid Cymru group of deliberately holding back the controversial report into Bodlondeb until after the recent elections.

Mr Williams, whose brother is a resident at Bodlondeb, has been involved in several campaigns to protect the future of the home and said support was needed again to ensure the home is not lost.

He said: “I would urge the public of Penparcau and north Ceredigion to support a very strong campaign against closure of Bodlondeb.

“Six years ago we had an excellent campaign for Bodlondeb, so let’s make it even better this time. This is extremely important, not just for the north of the county, but for the whole of Ceredigion.”

Mr Williams hit out at the Plaid Cymru group on the council claiming that Plaid’s new Ceredigion MP Ben Lake had been “badly let down” by the announcement that the authority wants to close Bodlondeb.

Cllr ap Gwynn said: “As leader of the coalition that runs the council following the recent election, I have to take account of the views of all members of the Cabinet before we move to decision on all matters.

“However, no sensitive information can be released by council officers during the period after any election is called and the announcement of the result.

“That period is known as ‘purdah’. That is the reason why we were not able to discuss this matter until after the Westminster elections."
