A FORMER Ceredigion MP has called for the impeachment of the former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, following the release of a damning report on an inquiry into the UK government’s decision to join a US-led invasion in Iraq in 2003.
Simon Thomas, now a Mid and West Wales AM said the report into the Chilcot inquiry, led by Sir John Chilcot, which has been seven years in the making and was finally released last week, should be enough for MPs to “re-examine the case for impeaching” then-Prime Minister Mr Blair.
The report found that the UK “chose to join the invasion of Iraq before the peaceful options for disarmament had been exhausted”.
“Military action at that time was not a last resort,” it added.
The report also found that Iraq’s capabilities for Weapons of Mass Destruction were “presented with a certainty that was not justified.”
The inquiry did not reach a view on the legality of the war, saying this could only be assessed by a “properly constituted and internationally recognised court”.
Mr Thomas, Plaid Cymru Ceredigion MP from 2000 to 2005 voted against the war in Iraq, and said his vote had been “vindicated” by the report.
“I voted against war in Iraq and never believed Blair’s lies,” he said.
“Tony Blair told the House of Commons that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction as a justification to go to war.
“He swayed MPs to vote for an illegal war and attempted to change public opinion with the claim that weapons of mass destruction were present in the country."
